      Summary
      • This volume contains the proceedings of two international colloquia held in Japan in 1992. The various contributions by pre-eminent scientists cover the fields of quantum field theory, statistical and solid state physics, quantum groups and subfactors and index theory, and operator algebras and related topics.
      • In the past decade, there has been a sudden and vigorous development in a number of research areas in mathematics and mathematical physics, such as theory of operator algebras, knot theory, theory of manifolds, infinite dimensional Lie algebras and quantum groups (as a new topics), etc. on the side of mathematics, quantum field theory and statistical mechanics on the side of mathematical physics. The new development is characterized by very strong relations and interactions between different research areas which were hitherto considered as remotely related. Focussing on these new developments in mathematical physics and theory of operator algebras, the International Oji Seminar on Quantum Analysis was held at the Kansai Seminar House, Kyoto, JAPAN during June 25-29, 1992 by a generous sponsorship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Fujihara Foundation of Science, as a workshop of relatively small number of (about 50) invited participants. This was followed by an open Symposium at RIMS, described below by its organizer, A. Kishimoto. The Oji Seminar began with two key-note addresses, one by V.F.R. Jones on Spin Models in Knot Theory and von Neumann Algebras and by A. Jaffe on Where Quantum Field Theory Has Led. Subsequently topics such as Subfactors and Sector Theory, Solvable Models of Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Groups, and Renormalization Group Ap- proach, are discussed. Towards the end, a panel discussion on Where Should Quantum Analysis Go? was held.

      Summary
      • Fuzzy Days in Dortmund were held for the first time in 1991. Initially, the con- ference was intended for scientists and practitioners as a platform for discussions on theory and application of fuzzy logic. Early on, synergetic links with neural networks were included and the conference evolved gradually to embrace the full spectrum of what is now called Computational Intelligence (CI). Therefore, it seemed logical to launch the 4th Fuzzy Days in 1994 as a conference for CI-one of the world's first conferences featuring fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolu- tionary algorithms together in one event. Following this successful tradition, the 6th Fuzzy Days' aim is to provide an international forum for reporting significant results on the theory and application of Cl-methods. Once again, we have received a remarkable number of papers. I would like to express my gratitude to all who have been interested in presenting their work within the framework of this conference and to the members of the programme committee for their valuable work (in this edition each paper was reviewed by five referees). In particular, I wish to thank all keynote and tutorial speakers for their commitment. Last but not least, I am obliged to the Deutsche Forschun- gemeinschaft and Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet for their financial support.

      Summary
      • Calculus and Its Applications has, for years, been a best-selling text for one simple reason: it anticipates, then meets the needs of today's applied calculus student. Knowing that calculus is a course in which students typically struggle--both with algebra skills and visualizing new calculus concepts--Bittinger and Ellenbogen speak to students in a way they understand, taking great pains to provide clear and careful explanations. Since most students taking this course will go on to careers in the business world, large quantities of real data, especially as they apply to business, are included as well.

      Summary
      • For a one-semester alternative to the traditional two-semester developmental algebra sequence that prepares students specifically for an Introductory Statistics course. Looking for a new path in algebra? Using authentic data to make math meaningful to students, Jay Lehmann's A Pathway to Introductory Statistics provides a one-semester alternate path through developmental algebra to accelerate and prepare non-STEM students for introductory statistics. For many students' majors, the most fitting college-level math course is statistics. Tailoring their developmental sequence-in both content and approach-to prepare students for this course of study can only improve their success. Infused with highly relevant data sets throughout, Lehmann presents students with both an introduction to descriptive statistics and the requisite algebra topics needed for a statistics course, while demonstrating the close link between the two subjects. This text equips students to reason statistically as they discover the skills and concepts they'll need for statistics. Summary
      • In every sufficiently large structure which has been partitioned there will always be some well-behaved structure in one of the parts. This takes many forms. For example, colorings of the integers by finitely many colors must have long monochromatic arithmetic progressions (van der Waerden's theorem); and colorings of the edges of large graphs must have monochromatic subgraphs of a specified type (Ramsey's theorem). This book explores many of the basic results and variations of this theory. Since the first edition of this book there have been many advances in this field. In the second edition the authors update the exposition to reflect the current state of the art. They also include many pointers to modern results.

      Summary
      • In the preface to Volume One I promised a second volume which would contain the theory of linear mappings and special classes of spaces im- portant in analysis. It took me nearly twenty years to fulfill this promise, at least to some extent. To the six chapters of Volume One I added two new chapters, one on linear mappings and duality (Chapter Seven), the second on spaces of linear mappings (Chapter Eight). A glance at the Contents and the short introductions to the two new chapters will give a fair impression of the material included in this volume. I regret that I had to give up my intention to write a third chapter on nuclear spaces. It seemed impossible to include the recent deep results in this field without creating a great further delay. A substantial part of this book grew out of lectures I held at the Mathematics Department of the University of Maryland* during the academic years 1963-1964, 1967-1968, and 1971-1972. I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues J. BRACE, S. GOLDBERG, J. HORVATH, and G. MALTESE for many stimulating and helpful discussions during these years. I am particularly indebted to H. JARCHOW (Ziirich) and D. KEIM (Frankfurt) for many suggestions and corrections. Both have read the whole manuscript. N. ADASCH (Frankfurt), V. EBERHARDT (Miinchen), H. MEISE (Diisseldorf), and R. HOLLSTEIN (Paderborn) helped with important observations.

      Summary
      • At long last, the mechanism-based and application-oriented handbook of combinatorial chemistry. Since its very beginning, research in this field has continued to develop at a rapid rate. Increasingly elegant methods are being invented and an even wider range of possible applications is still being discovered, such that combinatorial chemistry is now an integral part of industrial and academic research. The high-class editorial team - K. C. Nicolaou of The Scripps Institute and UCSD, and R. Hanko and W. Hartwig from Bayer - ensure comprehensive coverage and top quality contributions. This two-volume work deals with synthetic chemistry in all its forms, applications from life sciences, chemistry and material sciences, all there is to know about compound library design and synthesis, and, of course, the general basics - making it an indispensable reference for synthetic, organic and medicinal chemists, chemical biologists as well as material scientists.
      • Review: "...an up--to--date, authoritative, comprehensive reference source that should be indispensable for synthetic, organic and medicinal chemists; chemical biologists; and material scientists." (The Chemical Educator, Vol. 10, No. 4. 2005) "...an excellent contribution to the field of research..." (Chemistry & Industry, 6 January 2003) "...this book is a valuable and rich source of information..." (Perkin Transactions, Vol.1, No.23, 2002) "...it is an excellent reference book that most researchers in the field will want on their bookshelves and/or in their library..." (Synthesis, No. 7, 2003)

      Summary
      • This volume contains the proceedings of the tenth annual Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS '93), held in W}rzburg, February 25-27, 1993. The STACS symposia are held alternately in Germany and France, and organized jointly by the Special Interest Group for Theoretical Computer Science of the Gesellschaft f}r Informatik (GI) and theSpecial Interest Group for Applied Mathematics of the Association Francaise des Sciences et Technologies de l'Information et des Syst mes (afcet). The volume includes the three invited talks which opened the three days of the symposium: "Causal and distributed semantics for concurrent processes" (I. Castellani), "Parallel architectures: design and efficient use" (B. Monien et al.), and "Transparent proofs" (L. Babai). The selection of contributed papers is organized into parts on: computational complexity, logic in computer science, efficient algorithms, parallel and distributed computation, language theory, computational geometry, automata theory, semantics and logic of programming languages, automata theory and logic, circuit complexity, omega-automata, non-classical complexity, learning theory and cryptography, and systems.

      Summary
      • HIS BOOK IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE A COURSE IN PRACTICAL Geometry for engineering students who have already received some instruction in elementary plane geometry, graph plotting, and the use T of vectors. It also covers the requirements of Secondary School pupils taking Practical Geometry at the Advanced Level. The grouping adopted, in which Plane Geometry is dealt with in Part I, and Solid or Descriptive Geometry in Part II, is artificial, and it is the intention that the two parts should be read concurrently. The logical treatment of the subject presents many difficulties and the sequence of the later chapters in both parts is necessarily a compromise; as an illustration, certain of the more easy inter- sections and developments might with advantage be taken at an earlier stage than that indicated. In Part I considerable space has been devoted to Engineering Graphics, particularly to the applications of graphical integration. The use of graphical methods of computation is fully justified in most engineering problems of a practical nature-especially where analytical methods would prove laborious -the results obtained being as accurate as the data warrant.

      Summary
      • Generative Programming (GP) offers the promise of moving from "one-of-a-kind" software systems to the semi-automated manufacture of wide varieties of software -- essentially, an assembly line for software systems. GP's goal is to model software system families and build software modules such that, given particular requirements specs, highly customized and optimized intermediate or end products can be constructed on demand. This is the first book to cover Generative Programming in depth. The authors, leaders in their field, introduce the two-stage GP development cycle: one stage for designing and implementing a generative domain model, and another for using the model to build concrete systems. They review key differences between generative modeling and processes used for "one-of-a-kind" systems. Next, they introduce key GP concepts such as feature models, and demonstrate "generic programming" techniques for creating components which lend themselves to easy combination and reuse. The book also introduces Aspect Oriented Programming, which allows developers to solve key recurring problems in traditional O-O development; and presents metaprogramming techniques for building powerful program generators. Three detailed case studies demonstrate the entire generative development cycle, from analysis to implementation.

      Summary
      • Management and cost accounting has been the basic toolbox in business administration for decades. Today it is an integral part of all curricula in business education and no student can afford not to be familiar with its basic concepts and instruments. At the same time, business in general, and management accounting in particular, is becoming more and more international. English clearly has evolved as the "lingua franca" of international business. Academics, students as well as practitioners exchange their views and ideas, discuss concepts and communicate with each other in English. This is certainly also true for cost accounting and management accounting. Management Accounting is becoming increasingly international. "Management and Cost Accounting" is a new English language textbook covering concepts and instruments of cost and management accounting at an introductory level (Bachelor, but also suited for MBA courses due to strong focus on practical applications and cases). This textbook covers all topics that are relevant in management accounting in business organizations and that are typically covered in German and Central European Bachelor classes on cost accounting and management accounting. After an introduction to the topic, including major differences between the German approach and the purely Anglo-Saxon approach of management accounting, the book describes different cost terms and concepts applied in German cost accounting, The book is much more specific here compared to US-American standard textbooks. Based on different cost concepts, the topic of cost behavior is discussed, including the determination of cost functions. The heart of the book guides the reader through the general structure of a fully developed cost accounting system following the German and Central European standard: It starts with cost type accounting, moves on to cost center accounting and finally deals with cost unit accounting, assigning cost to goods and services offered in the market. The remaining parts of the book deal with decision making and how management and cost accounting data can support managers in this task. A comparison of absorption costing and variable costing introduces the reader to management decisions such as product portfolio and outsourcing decisions. Additionally, cost-volume-profit analysis (break-even-analysis) is covered. The book closes with a comprehensive treatment of cost planning and variance analysis.

      Summary
      • In a comprehensive yet easy-to-follow manner, Discrete Mathematics for New Technology follows the progression from the basic mathematical concepts covered by the GCSE in the UK and by high-school algebra in the USA to the more sophisticated mathematical concepts examined in the latter stages of the book. The book punctuates the rigorous treatment of theory with frequent uses of pertinent examples and exercises, enabling readers to achieve a feel for the subject at hand. The exercise hints and solutions are provided at the end of the book. Topics covered include logic and the nature of mathematical proof, set theory, relations and functions, matrices and systems of linear equations, algebraic structures, Boolean algebras, and a thorough treatise on graph theory. Although aimed primarily at computer science students, the structured development of the mathematics enables this text to be used by undergraduate mathematicians, scientists, and others who require an understanding of discrete mathematics.

      Summary
      • Workflow management systems (WFMS) are enjoying increasing popular- ity due to their ability to coordinate and streamline complex organizational processes within organizations of all sizes. Organizational processes are de- scriptions of an organization's activities engineered to fulfill its mission such as completing a business contract or satisfying a specific customer request. Gaining control of these processes allows an organization to reengineer and improve each process or adapt them to changing requirements. The goal of WFMSs is to manage these organizational processes and coordinate their execution. was demonstrated in the first half The high degree of interest in WFMSs of the 1990s by a significant increase in the number of commercial products (once estimated to about 250) and the estimated market size (in combined $2 billion in 1996. Ensuing maturity product sales and services) of about is demonstrated by consolidations during the last year. Ranging from mere e-mail based calendar tools and flow charting tools to very sophisticated inte- grated development environments for distributed enterprise-wide applications and systems to support programming in the large, these products are finding an eager market and opening up important research and development op- portunities. In spite of their early success in the market place, however, the current generation of systems can benefit from further research and develop- ment, especially for increasingly complex and mission-critical applications.

      Summary
      • Emphasizing causation as a functional relationship between variables that describe objects, Linear Causal Modeling with Structural Equations integrates a general philosophical theory of causation with structural equation modeling (SEM) that concerns the special case of linear causal relations. In addition to describing how the functional relation concept may be generalized to treat probabilistic causation, the book reviews historical treatments of causation and explores recent developments in experimental psychology on studies of the perception of causation. It looks at how to perceive causal relations directly by perceiving quantities in magnitudes and motions of causes that are conserved in the effects of causal exchanges. The author surveys the basic concepts of graph theory useful in the formulation of structural models. Focusing on SEM, he shows how to write a set of structural equations corresponding to the path diagram, describes two ways of computing variances and covariances of variables in a structural equation model, and introduces matrix equations for the general structural equation model. The text then discusses the problem of identifying a model, parameter estimation, issues involved in designing structural equation models, the application of confirmatory factor analysis, equivalent models, the use of instrumental variables to resolve issues of causal direction and mediated causation, longitudinal modeling, and nonrecursive models with loops. It also evaluates models on several dimensions and examines the polychoric and polyserial correlation coefficients and their derivation. Covering the fundamentals of algebra and the history of causality, this book provides a solid understanding of causation, linear causal modeling, and SEM. It takes readers through the process of identifying, estimating, analyzing, and evaluating a range of models.
      • Review: "...an accessible yet rigorous treatment of the subject and is likely to be appealing to a wide statistical audience. ... I enjoyed reading this book and suspect others will too. I would recommend this book for students and researchers [who] are familiar with standard applied statistics and causal inference but are looking for an introduction to structural equation modeling." -Eric Laber, Journal of the American Statistical Association, September 2013 "The book is written by one of the most prominent researchers in the field of structural equation models (SEM). ... It is primarily a useful textbook for graduate students but could also be very useful for researchers in quantitative methods. ... the book presents the standard methods of SEM in a form that makes them interesting to students and researchers with interests in the philosophical treatment of causality using SEM. ... a very useful textbook for graduate students. It stands out for its rigorous treatment of SEM as a whole and for a particularly useful philosophical treatment of causality. ... Stanley Mulaik's book is one of the most useful ones with which to start a journey in this field." -Spiridon Penev, Australian & New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 2011 "The book benefits very substantially from the author's mixed background in multivariate analysis, psychometrics, and philosophy of science-a background which is ideally suited to the eclectic issues raised by considerations of causality. I am sure the volume will prove to be a very useful contribution to the literature, an excellent text for someone intending to research in this area, and a useful reference source for those already doing so." -David J. Hand, International Statistical Review (2011), 79

      Summary
      • Abstract: The symmetric automorphism group of a free product is a group rich in algebraic structure and with strong links to geometric configuration spaces. In this thesis I describe in detail and for the first time the (co)homology of the symmetric automorphism groups. To this end I construct a classifying space for the Fouxe-Rabinovitch automorphism group, a large normal subgroup of the symmetric automorphism group. This classifying space is a moduli space of 'cactus products', each of which has the homotopy type of a wedge product of spaces. To study this space we build a combinatorial theory centred around 'diagonal complexes' which may be of independent interest. The diagonal complex associated to the cactus products consists of the set of forest posets, which in turn characterise the homology of the moduli spaces of cactus products. The machinery of diagonal complexes is then turned towards the symmetric automorphism groups of a graph product of groups. I also show that symmetric automorphisms may be determined by their categorical properties and that they are in particular characteristic of the free product functor. This goes some way to explain their occurence in a range of situations. The final chapter is devoted to a class of configuration spaces of Euclidean n-spheres embedded disjointly in (n+2)-space. When n = 1 this is the configuration space of unknotted, unlinked loops in 3-space, which has been well studied. We continue this work for higher n and find that the fundamental groups remain unchanged. We then consider the homology and the higher homotopy groups of the configuration spaces. Our last contribution is an epilogue which discusses the place of these groups in the wider field of mathematics. It is the functoriality which is important here and using this new-found emphasis we argue that there should exist a generalised version of the material from the final chapter which would apply to a far wider range of configuration spaces.
